La Regenta, Oviedo
Oviedo
La Regenta 'La Regenta', Ana Ozores, is the heroine of the most important Spanish novel of the XIXth century. Ana, a young and pretty girl, gets married with a rich and elderly gentleman. Although he is kind to her, he soon forgets her. Aware of her situation and attracted by her beauty a wealthy and unscrupulous man begins to harass her. In despair she will only find confort in his confessor, and will fall in love with him. So the scandal is served. Leopoldo Alas, known by his nickname of 'Clarín' depicted Oviedo (under the madeup name of 'Vetusta'='Ancient') and its society with the most keen eye to bring to the light all the little town's moral miseries.
The sculpture by Mauro Álvarez was installed in 1997 in front of the Cathedral, silent witness of Ana and her lover's sad love story.
