Martyr's Shrine
Kaohsiung

The Martyr’s Shrine is located on the hill foot of Shoushan, and originally it was a Japanese Shrine.During the Pacific War, in order to promote cohesion and union to Japan, the shrine was rebuilt and renamed as “Kaohsiung Shrine.” At the end of the World War II, the R.O.C.government transformed the shrine to commemorate martyrs. On national mourning days every spring and fall, the head of local government holds solemn ceremonies.Because the shrine was old, it was rebuilt as Chinese palace style one on the original site in 1974.At the Martyr’s Shrine, old pine trees provide a spectacular scenic view, and on the stone steps in front of the memorial archway, visitors are able to look at the Port of Kaohsiung and Kaohsiung City.In recent years, Kaohsiung City Government has allocated a budget for rebuilding with a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) project with the aim of developing a scenic spot with the functions of culture and historical preservation and leisure.
